Snow White and Rose Red were two sisters who loved each other dearly. Rose Red was outspoken, cheerful, and loved to play outside. Snow White was quiet, shy, and preferred doing housework and reading. One winter night, a bear arrives at their door and requests to warm himself by the fire. They are wary, but allow him in and soon the three become friends. In the morning, he leaves, but returns every night. When summer comes, the bear leaves to guard his treasure. One day, the girls find a dwarf whose beard is stuck in a tree. The girls rescue him by cutting his beard. When he’s freed, the dwarf yells at them for cutting his beautiful beard. Similar encounters with the dwarf occur throughout the summer. Then one day, they run into the terrified dwarf, who is being chased by the bear. The dwarf pleads with the bear to eat the girls instead but the bear kills the dwarf with one swipe of his paw. Instantly, the bear turns into a prince. The bear tells the girls how the dwarf had put a spell on him. Snow White marries the prince, and Rose Red marries his brother. Read more about this tale here.

Rapunzel is an older and well-known fairy tale about a maiden raised in a tower and trapped by a witch. The only means of reaching her is by climbing her long hair. One day, a prince hears her singing and falls in love with her. They plan an escape, but are discovered by the witch when Rapunzel starts to show signs of pregnancy. The witch cuts Rapunzel’s hair and casts her out into the wilderness. The Prince comes to visit and when he climbs the hair rope, the witch tells him Rapunzel is gone. In despair, he throws himself out the window and is blinded by the thorn bushes below. The Prince wanders the wilderness blindly for months and is saved when he hears Rapunzel singing to her twin children. The two are reunited and his eyesight is magically restored. May 22 - The Juniper Tree
Despite how dark this tale actually is, I decided to take a “face value” approach and go based off of the title mostly. (I ran out of time, I got ready sick!)In this story, a woman wishes for a child, but soon dies after giving birth. She is buried under the Juniper Tree. The husband remarries, but the new wife hates her step son (but loves her own daughter). She kills him by slamming a lid on his neck, puts his head back on, and makes it seem like the daughter kills him by bopping his head (it rolls off). The step mother cooks his flesh, and the sister buries his bones under the Juniper Tree. A bird appears to the family, individually, and sings a song of the death of the boy, giving them each a gift. Want to know the gifts? Check the story out here!

The Juniper Tree is a darker fairy tale collected by the Grimm Brothers.
A mother’s dying wish is to be buried under a Juniper tree. Her husband and son grieve her death, but the husband eventually remarries. His second wife gives birth to a little girl, who she adores, but she hates her step-son. One day, the second wife has an evil thought and offers the son an apple. As he reaches in the box to get it, she slams the heavy lid down, beheading him. The step-mother takes a bandage and ties his head back to his body. Then she tells her daughter to ask her brother for the apple, and if he doesn’t give it to her, to give him a good box on the ear. The daughter kindly asks for the apple, and then not receiving an answer, boxes him on the ear, resulting in the boy’s head falling off. She goes to her mother in tears and confesses she killed her brother. Her mother tells her not to tell her father. The stepmother then turns the boy’s body into a stew. The little girl keeps the bones and buries them beneath the Juniper tree. A bird flies out of the tree and sings a lovely song. The father goes out to see what is singing and a golden chain falls about his neck. The little girl goes out to see the bird, and beautiful red shoes are given to her. The bird sings a third time, and the stepmother goes out. The bird drops a millstone on her, crushing and killing her. The father and daughter go out to see what caused the loud crash, but find nothing of the step-mother, but a swirl of smoke and a stone, and the brother standing there, looking happy.

May 21 - Snow White
The basics of snow white involve a beautiful young woman, a jealous evil step mother, the looking glass, a poison apple, and a bunch of dwarves!
I’ve read many adaptions that involved much darker themes, like rape, abuse, and cannibalism; my drawing for this is based more on those darker versions.

May 20 - Allerleirauh
Allerleirauh, or “all kinds of fur,” is a classic 510B tale, about a king who wants to marry his daughter since she is the only one who is as beautiful as his dead wife. (Akin to Catskin, Donkeyskin, Tattercoats, etc). She says she will marry him if he makes her three dresses and a mantle, but then runs away under the cover of the mantle, which is made of all the fur and feathers of the animals of the kingdom. She is found in a new kingdom and is called Allerleirauh, and begins to work in the kitchen. At night, she sneaks away, wears her dresses, and goes to the ball. Eventually the prince of this kingdom falls in love with her, finds her, and marries her.
